Canada: Our Anthem

All in all, I’m pretty proud to be Canadian 😀 I’m fourth generation Canadian on one side and second on the other.  I’m so thankful for the life I’ve been able to live in this glorious place!

Most Canadians know our national anthem (I hope!) 🙂 Some would even know that there are two versus.  I’d wager that most wouldn’t know there are four versus to our anthem!  The words are lovely, and I thought I’d share them with you. (Lyrics came from this website.)

Canada’s national anthem, as proclaimed in 1980, is a slightly modified version of the first verse of a poem written by Judge R. Stanley Weir in 1908.

O Canada! Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North, strong and free!
And stand on guard, O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, glorious and free!
We stand on guard, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!

O Canada! Where pines and maples grow.
Great prairies spread and lordly rivers flow.
How dear to us thy broad domain,
From East to Western Sea,
Thou land of hope for all who toil!
Thou True North, strong and free!

Refrain

O Canada! Beneth thy shining skies
May stalwart sons and gentle maidens rise,
To keep thee steadfast through the years
From East to Western Sea,
Our own beloved native land!
Our True North, strong and free!

Refrain

Ruler supreme, who hearest humble prayer,
Hold our dominion within thy loving care;
Help us to find, O God, in thee
A lasting, rich reward,
As waiting for the Better Day,
We ever stand on guard.

Refrain

Original Poem by Judge, R. Stanley Weir, 1908

If you’re not Canadian, I hope you enjoyed our anthem 🙂 If you are Canadian…Happy Canada Day! 🙂 Wherever you may be I wish you all the best and take a moment to be thankful for your country weather it’s Canada or not! 😉

Always, Aims

As mention above, those are the slightly modified words of the original poem. In case you’re curious… here are the official lyrics of the orginal verse as stated July 1, 1980.

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love
in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts
we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!

From far and wide,
O Canada,
we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land
glorious and free!
O Canada,
we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada,
we stand on guard for thee.

Official Lyrics, July 1, 1980

  1. Happy Canada Day Aim! i’ve never been to Canada but I love Canada maple syrup and the maple leaves!! Thanks for the encouraging words about my first post. cheers.

  2. Iteresting verses! Makes the patriot rise up in me! Great country, great song. Yeah, but not happy about them messing the fist verse up and taking “God keep our land” out.

    1. I wholeheartedly agree, Kadin! That’s exactly the reason I posted the “official” lyrics at the end of my post! 😀 Versus 3 and 4 are pretty epic, eh!

      1. No doubt eh! Haha. To be considered a Stalwart son of this country would pretty well suffice as a life well lived. Long live King Harper!
